Urban Heat Island Mitigation

Cincinnati has about 30 days in a year when the temperature is above 90oF. It deals with 4 heat events a year and last year during the heatwave of mid-August, it had 145 fatalities, that almost 10% of the national death toll. Besides, the death tolls, it faces other issues related to UHI and Climate change as well. Pavements happen to be the biggest contributor to the UHI. Mitigation of this problem is of utmost importance for an ambient temperature and healthy life. In this capstone, two approaches were explored - green infrastructure and technology. Green infrastructure is the nature-based solutions and some combination of green and grey solutions. The other being to successfully utilize the wasted heat into something useful such as generate renewable energy.
